Franciscan Benediction

"May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart.

May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace.

May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain in to joy.

And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done."

Sometimes I think our society wants to get rid of the emotions and feelings that inspire us to do-the-right-thing. Magazines tell us how to be happy, pretty, and strong. Television advertises us to buy things because we deserve them. These messages lead us to be self-aware and not other-aware.

I hope to remember to ask myself these questions this year:

1. What discomfort have I felt that led me to do something for another?
2. What anger have I felt so deeply that I committed to do something about it?
3. What tears have I shed on behalf of someone else in feeling their pain?
4. What foolishness have I felt that I could make a difference?

Will you join me in asking yourself these questions so that maybe we can be foolish together?
