Food Waste Friday

I've taken a bit of a cooking break this summer. You should interpret this as: "I've tried really hard to avoid cooking all summer so my family has lived on sandwiches, granola bars, and smoothies."

Without cooking, I haven't been making a menu. Without making a menu, I haven't been making grocery lists. Without grocery lists, I haven't been keeping track of what I've been buying. Without keeping track of what I've been buying, I haven't been aware of my food waste.

Sigh.

I'm hoping to tackle this problem one-step-at-a-time, starting with owning up to my food waste. This is not fun....especially since I've been reading Garbology: Our Dirty Love Affair with Trash by Edward Humes. More on that another time.

In this picture is: a science experiment of mold in the half-eaten sour cream container, some refried beans, potatoes that were from last September (no joke), some homemade salsa that didn't get finished, two slices of watermelon, some strawberries, some wonton wrappers, and a wee-little amount of honeyed goat cheese. Well. That's embarrassing.

The fridge is clean. So now I can see what I've bought, buy what's on my list, make a menu to know what to put on my list, and start cooking.

Potatoes from last September. Now that's impressive. Looks like you've done a good clean out so you can start next week fresh.
