Homemade Fortune Cookies Using a Pizzelle Press (Organic)


Our daughter is part of Daisies. It's a homeschool troop that meets twice a month at a church near our house. This week they are having a Tea. Oddly enough, she has another Tea on Saturday!

At her Daisy Tea, they will be serving foods from five countries of the world, including fortune cookies. Obviously, we cannot go to the store and buy fortune cookies with our daughter's allergy issues! I had to figure out how make them...and since I forgot about the tea until tonight, I had to figure it out pretty gosh darn fast!

In early December, we bought a pizzelle press to make waffle cones. I used that to make the fortune cookies. Be warned: you have to have tough, heat resistant fingers and the ability to curse a little bit to make these! 

Homemade Fortune Cookie Recipe:
1 egg
1 egg white
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons melted and cooled butter OR canola oil
2/3 cup flour

- Heat your Pizzelle press. Whisk your eggs, salt, and sugar until fluffy. Mix in the vanilla. Mix in the butter or oil. Fold in the flour, being careful not to over-mix. 
- When your pizzelle press is ready, drop in a little less than 1 tablespoon of mix per pizzelle round. 
- When your machine tells you it's ready to open,
1. quickly lift the pizzelle out of the machine's grooves using a small fork
2. lay the fortune in the middle of the pizzelle
3. lightly fold the pizzelle in half, keeping the folded side facing your stomach
4. pull the corners towards each other and towards your stomach

hi there, do you know what size pizzelle press you used for these?
I'm trying to figure out whether I should buy a 3, 4, or 5-inch pizzelle press. They look great!

Jenny, my pizelle press is 4 inches. If you just want to make fortune cookies with the press, then I think the 3 or the 4 inch would work. If you want to make ice cream cones and fortune cookies with the press, then I recommend the 4 inch because the 3 inch would make really small cones.

My husband is Italian and his grandmother gave me a hand press iron for our engagement gift over 30 years ago. My boys have always enjoyed making them with me, a family affair especially at Christmas time. We recently purchased a 5 inch electric model as they EAT them as fast as we can make them...and since my husband's parents are elderly, we make the recipes and send them as gifts. Our youngest son is getting married this summer and I was looking for a 3 inch iron as we are making the traditional Italian cookies for the wedding as we live on the West Coast. I stumbled on your recipe and am so glad I did...as I plan to make these with THEIR fortune in them as a surprise. Thanks SO much for the idea.
